We are currently seeking a CONTROLLER to oversee the company's accounting operations and staff in our PLEASANTON, CA office, ensuring processes and controls align with strategic goals. This service-oriented professional fosters positive relationships with leadership, staff, and clients through a friendly, professional approach, and collaborates with HR to support policy and regulatory compliance.
This role requires onsite attendance Monday through Friday at our Pleasanton, CA office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares and oversees the production of financial statements, activity reports, forecasts, and annual budgets.
- Produces and ensures the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, including cash flow statements, income statements, balance sheets, billing, collections, and shareholder reports
- Ensures that reported results comply with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and other financial regulations.
- Leads financial planning, including budgeting, variance analysis, and forecasting to support executive decision-making.
- Monitors cash flow and manages banking relationships.
- Analyzes historical and projected financial data to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Oversees staff handling billing, collections, payroll, and accounts payable; provides leadership and training for effective financial operations.
- Develops and maintains a documented system of accounting policies, procedures and internal controls; leads internal audits as needed
- Coordinates external audits and acts as a liaison with auditors and government agencies, ensuring that proper information is maintained for historical purposes
- Prepares and facilitates tax returns in coordination with external CPA; manages city/state quarterly tax returns
- Oversees semimonthly payroll using ADP Workforce Now, ensuring accuracy and compliance with government regulatory agencies.
- Verifies year-end payroll data, including W2s, 401k/ESOP benefits, state tax filings, Workers Comp, and other agency responses/audits.
- Supports the full-suite implementation of Vantagepoint , which includes re-engineering/streamlining processes and workflows to optimize system capabilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, FLSA/federal, state and local laws relating to payroll
- Strong financial systems/software skills; VantagePoint / Deltek and ADP highly preferred
- Expert-level MS Excel skills required, including advanced formula creation (e.g., nested IFS, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH), pivot tables, dynamic dashboards, and data modeling/integration with external data sources
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills, including ability to translate and communicate complex financial concepts to non-finance project managers
- Strong team ethic with ability to lead through influence, as well as delegate constructively
- Ability to objectively appraise and analyze the qualifications and performance of others as well as the ability to plan and direct their activities; and to judge the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances or problems
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; FPC/CPP, CPA, or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience in a professional services environment (architecture, engineering, construction, law), including a minimum of 5 years as a controller and and 3 years in a supervisory role.
- Solid experience in overseeing project accounting, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll, and coordination of audit activities, budget development and analysis
- Demonstrated willingness to stay current with relevant law and software updates

We offer a competitive compensation package based on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage. We also offer the opportunity to participate in a pre-tax Flexible Spending plan, Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and 401k.
Salary range: $120,000 - $140,000 depending on qualifications. Placement within this pay range will be determined by factors such as education, qualifications, project complexity and/or experience. The maximum is reserved for candidates who currently meet all job requirements.
